Reference Information
Sawlogs are straight logs of natural moisture, suitable for sawing lumber. Logs are called logs with a diameter of 14 cm to 45 cm. For softwoods, lengths are from 3.0 to 6.5 m. (GOST 9463-88), for hardwoods, lengths are from 1.0 to 6.0 meters (GOST 9462. -88). In simple words, this is a round forest, taken out by a timber truck to a saw-timber, from which it is possible to saw a timber or boards.
The lower part of the tree (mainly birch) is called fancier – it is plywood raw material. It is cut into thin veneer with a thickness of 1.5-2 mm. This should be very high-quality wood without knots with a diameter of more than 20 cm and less than 35 cm. – About 5-6 meters from a 30-meter tree. The rest goes to wood chips or to balance.
Balance is the top of the tree or curved logs from which it is not possible to cut a quality straight board. The balance usually goes to pulp mills, or crushed into chips for later use.
