A summit was held in Paris, where representatives of 196 states were gathered. It discussed the issue of combating global climate change.
It has been recognized that the main cause of global warming is carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from human activities.
As a result of the summit, a new climate agreement was adopted that defines the standards for greenhouse gas emissions after 2020 and measures to prevent climate change. The agreement will be signed on April 24, 2016 in the city of New York.
At the conference, Russian President V.V. Putin said that it is Russia’s forests that play an important role in reducing greenhouse gases in the Earth’s atmosphere, and by 2030 it is planned to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 70% from the 1990 level.
The influence of forests
Everyone knows that forests, through the process of photosynthesis, are able to collect and absorb huge volumes of carbon dioxide and various greenhouse gases, thus maintaining the ecosystem in equilibrium. But due to the large areas of deforestation, aging of forests, various natural disasters (fires), as well as a decrease compared to 1990, artificial reforestation (from 1.8 million ha to 0.8 million ha per year) – the number of forests decreased, which affected the increase in polluted emissions.
Measures such as forest conservation and protection, as well as active restoration of forests and their rational use, are most effective against global climate change.
